Palindrome of a Lost Generation

by Tammy Camp on January 24, 2010

A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite. This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant. Make sure you read as well as listen…forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old. The contest was titled “u @ 50″ by AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch it.

Which segment defines your point of view? Part 1 or part 2?

    Not at all a palindrome
  • Bilbo Baggins
It really isn't that amazing... The author just goes back and forth between positive and negative statements, with connectors in between, so that it is more positive when read backward.

  • Asdfasdfdsa
this isn't the same thing forwards and backward, it's something completely different backwards.

Also...i believe Amazon did a commercial similar for the kindle, or it was someone doing something about the preservation of books.
  • Snaps250
    that is not a palindrome.
  • Ya

    pal·in·drome
       /ˈpælɪnˌdroʊm/ Show Spelled[pal-in-drohm] Show IPA
    –noun
    1.
a word, line, verse, number, sentence, etc., reading the same backward as forward, as Madam, I'm Adam or Poor Dan is in a droop.
  • Chineseboy
    wow... that is brilliant!!!!
  • Never heard of this till now! Always learn something new. Thanks for the share.

Not a palindrome technically. A palindrome is like the word "racecar" the exact same forwards and backwards...like this one:

    "Dammit I’m mad.
Evil is a deed as I live.
God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.
To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.
Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?
Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.
I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.
Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,
In my halo of a mired rum tin.
I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.
Is evil in a clam? In a trap?
No. It is open. On it I was stuck.
Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.
Be still if I fill its ebb.
    Ew, a spider… eh?
    We sleep. Oh no!
Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.
Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.
Both, one… my names are in it.
    Murder? I’m a fool.
A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash,
A Goddam level I lived at.
On mail let it in. I’m it.
Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet!
A loss it is alas (sip). I’d assign it a name.
Name not one bottle minus an ode by me:
    “Sir, I deliver. I’m a dog”
Evil is a deed as I live.
    Dammit I’m mad."

Its the exact same, forward and backwards....however this piece is still very good :)

    A for effort

Are the people who are refusing to concede that this *isn't* a palindrome trolling or just mentally retarded? I guess it's at least arguable that there's no difference between the two.
  • itsmejackiep
This post made me cry! What a wonderfully thought out statement
  • Inspiring isn't it?
  • pwned
    not a pallindrome
  • :P
No this person is right, It's not a palindrome. If it was a palindrome It would read exactly the same backward as forward, and it doesn't. It's close though. And very good.
  • Western Willy
Most palindromes are of letters of words, and this is of sentences. Same idea taken to a new level.
  • You're Making Me Laugh
    Dumb. It is a palindrome.
  • Really outstanding
  • badgerthepirate
An interesting idea with a good message. I can see why it did so well in the competition. :)

And as far as the ongoing argument as to whether its a palindrome or not; does it really matter? just enjoy it for what it is.
  • Toast
    Not a palindrome at all.
  • NoU
This is not a palindrome. Fail.
  • Fernando Valle
    WOW!

I usually dont ever post stuff online or comment...

    but WWOOOOOWW!!

Hats off to the author of this video all the way down from Mexico.

Congratulations to whoever did this. I am in awe
  • Bee
    Inspired - well done!
  • nate
very cleaver! though i am curious as to if the contest was a video contest, rather then a writing contest. Great writing! but as far as a video... thats why you got second place. Although i dont know what the criteria for the contest was, it seems like this would have been a bit more amazing if it were an actual video, well that is if you were capable of capturing the meaning of the poem with cinematography. and as for those trolling this piece.... who gives a shit weather its a palindrome or not. There is even a brief explanation of what is going on

"A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite."

i dont think the creator was proving to the fucking world what palindrome is. enjoy the poem for what it is, maybe give some constructive criticism so that it can be made better. And furthermore i cant believe you guys go online and troll people all fucking day. yea its kinda funny but get a fucking life beyond making people look like fucking retards on the Internet!!

hypocritical?? maybe... but i dont do this shit all day every fucking day, this would be the first account of me adding a comment to anything on the Internet... or "trolling" as some would say... i was stumbling and came across this.

  • zwenkwiel
    hypocritical definatly.
but how is correcting a misconception trolling?
it's the people diving onto it with retarded remarks like
bet you're fun at parties party pooper.
that are the real trolls imo (they're the on trying to instigate conflict)
    and that would include you

so true and brilliant in its conception. thank you
  • janetmoore
Part 2 definitely, and great message from a 20 year old who sees through the propaganda about the way to live our lives.

Palindrom examples: RACECAR, KAYAK, LEVEL, ROTATOR

End of discussion. This is not a palindrome.

    Got grate sentence game...
  • gujabidze
Is title so important really?? call it whatever you want, the point is made and this is awesome, creative, fun to watch, makes you think about many things. what else it should do??
  • Diane
Arguing about whether this is or is not a palindrome is completely missing the bigger, more important point. Some people just like to argue.
  • I love it,very well done!
  • Jimmy H
yes it is a palindrome. internet people make me laugh at how hard it is for them to just simply GOOGLE the word palindrome.
  • Robert
no, it's not a palindrome, even if you argue that the sentences are units like someone up above did it's still not...palindromes are the same forwards as backwards....this, as you would have noticed if you read any of the comments, or even the intro, reads the exact opposite when read backwards...so no, not a palindrome...
  • Jimmy H
A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of units that can be read the same way in either direction (the adjustment of punctuation and spaces between words is generally permitted). Composing literature in palindromes is an example of constrained writing.
  • Grayshine
... All you people saying it's not a palindrome... So did the author of this article:
"A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the **exact opposite** backwards as forward."

Did... did you even read the intro line before scrolling down to gripe?
  • Wow.. If you wrote that, kudos to you. If not, still, kudos to you for a good find.
  • kdude
    not a pallindrome.
  • Dyson
This is not a palindrome! I reel at the shocking inaccuracy that the title of this page presents! Down with internet mislabeling! Still, though, very cool video.
  • Billy
    Shit,
    this video sucked so much.

    This video sucked so much
    shit.
  • Jeff
I thought the entire thing would be an actual palindrome... it's nowhere near as epic when you watch the video
  • Chris
Inspirational? Yes, maybe. Palindromic? No, definitely.
  • Dxr
Quite cool, but it isn't a palindrome - a palindrome is a word or set of words which read exactly regardless of the order you read the letters (i.e. left to right or right to left)
  • dxr
    typo: exactly *the same*
  • zerosober1
Very creative and insightful.... fun to watch!
  • kaptendiesel
That was quite a paradox :O what an original video :D
  • dwinkle
Also, it's very easy to write something like this. You simply make the third sentence the setup for the second sentence once read in reverse, and so on. Emotional babble like this is exactly the reason people don't get off it and actually do anything about the world.
  • unbound
dwinkle...actually, sitting around slinging mud at the efforts of others instead of providing either support or constructive criticism is probably the biggest reason not enough is done in the communities around us. It was done in a clever manner and should be applauded for that alone. The fact that it is touching people adds that much more to the overall effect.

Perhaps if modify your world-view to take something that is inspirational (doesn't matter if you think it is cheesy or not) and do something with it, you too can contribute to your community.
  • timeneffort
Dwinkle, you are what wrong with this world!
  • dwinkle
This is not brilliant. This is cheesy and trite. Also, it is obviously not a palindrome.
  • nilloc
I can't be the only one that wants to see the video that won first place.
  • Cynthia
    http://blog.aarp.org/shaarpsession/2008/03/u50_1st_place_video_1.html
I warn you though the first place video is disappointing and can't even hold a candle to the 2nd place Video shown here.
  • Wow, so true Cynthia...it is disappointing. How did that win first place over this video?
  • Jay
Ah, I love the internet. A beautiful piece of heartfelt artistry is put up, and the best most people can do is argue whether it is actually a palindrome or not. (Technically it is not; an example of a palindrome would be "Was it Tim's mitt I saw?". Removing the punctuation and spacing becomes "wasittimsmittisaw". Note that the ordering of the letters is the same whether read forwards or back. That is a palindrome.) But, regardless, it is a very fine poem, and I give the author applause.
  • dxr
and yet aren't you doing the exact same thing? ^_^

but yes, you have a point
  • most excellent!
  • Chris
I agree with Jonathan, partially. This is not a palindrome, so it should not be called one. It is not a cheap trick though, it's pretty cool and certainly not easy to do.
  • Wiki definition of "palindrome'

A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of units that can be read the same way in either direction (the adjustment of punctuation and spaces between words is generally permitted).

Although not a phrase, I defiantly think this is conceptually a palindrome. It is a sequence of units, no?
  • dont troll my typing
yeah, i am annoyed by the fact that they are trying to over-glorify this video as a giant palindrome. the definition above means that it ignore punctuation and spacing. "race car" backwards is "rac ecar" which still can be seen to be "race car". though this is interesting, it isn't a groundbreaking feat of wordsmithery.
  • Dyson
Yes, this is in fact conceptually the exact opposite of a palindrome. That being said, though, it is very cool.
  • Christian
"read the same way in either direction "...the sentence in the video does not fit this criteria.

it is not a palindrome, however it is incredibly creative and inspirational
  • Jonathan
Please stop calling this a palindrome. You're spreading misinformation. This is not a palindrome, not by definition or concept. This is reading sentences in reverse order. This is a cheap cloying trick.
  • emster
Wow. I bet you're fun at a party, Jonathan. These words will be spread around the internet and remembered long after your party-pooping pedantry is forgotten. Does it matter what we call them?
  • Mido
AMAZING! What a great work!!!! That was great!
  • I think it quite amazing as well Mido. Inspiring and creative.
  • Nikki
    awesome!
